Playing with food: allowed

How great are these ceramic plates?!! Love them!
Maxou is coming into an age where eating becomes sometimes difficult so I can only imagine what it will be like if our little tricks with avocado or dice of ham won’t work anymore. So I’m definetly getting some of these!! They look so much fun, don’t they? You just can’t not unload them, right?

One year

IMG_2676

Today is Maxous first birthday! I still can’t believe it. This year has passed so fast.
We all survived and most of all you did. I know it sounds crazy, but how many times at night I have held my breath to listen to yours. I’ve bent over the crib to feel your chest move. The first months are so scary..but also so wonderful, so intense,  so much like nothing else that I have lived so far. You already seem such a big boy compared to last year at that time. Two days ago you started walking and you’re so proud of it, it shines through your sunny eyes and your big smile, my little hero. You make my day every day. I feel so blessed, so lucky, so indescribably fortunate and happy. I couldn’t imagine it is possible to love a person so much, so beyond everything – thank you for showing me, my little man.

How Talking to your baby increases his IQ

smart-baby

..or The Power of talking to your baby.
They always tell you how important it is to talk to your baby from the first days on, during his first months in your belly already. For several reason. And I’m a big believer in this. I’m sure he or she can hear you and even though he/she might not understand your words, the tone of your voice is the message.
And then once they’re born, even though they’re still little babies I’m sure they understand what you tell them so I always try to explain everything to Maxou.
But this article by TINA ROSENBERG brings it even to another level.

Apparently “…the key to early learning is talking. Specifically, a child’s exposure to language spoken by parents and caretakers from birth to age 3, the more the better.” …”Children whose families were on welfare heard about 600 words per hour. Working-class children heard 1,200 words per hour, and children from professional families heard 2,100 words.”… “And the disparity mattered: the greater the number of words children heard from their parents or caregivers before they were 3, the higher their IQ and the better they did in school. TV talk not only didn’t help, it was detrimental.”

Wow, so talk talk talk!

Toxic toys..

The other day we watched this program about toxic toys on tv (arte) which was just…shocking!! I can’t believe this lack of control – the CE -seal doesn’t assure anything. ..trusting the companies to make their tests and assure that their toys don’t bear any dangerous substances whereas (at least) in Europe every year thousands of toys are withdrawn from the market because of their danger and poisonousness. And the victims are kids, babies – the most innocent beings on earth completely unknowing and trusting in us. I still can’t believe it. The restrictions for rubber ( the volatile aromatic hydrocarbons to be exact) in our car wheels are stricter than for the rubber toys that our children put into their mouth! (a 1000 times higher concentration of the substance is allowed than in the car wheels) Can you believe it? I’m really disgusted by all those big companies that make money on our children and their health.

So next thing I’ve done, I put away all the plastic toys that Maxou got from friends and family since he was born (sorry guys). I try to get him toys that are as natural as possible but it doesn’t count for my friends and family -which I understand. If you don’t have kids on our own you certainly never think of the danger that toys can bear -I didn’t either before.
And then I went to a great little wooden toys shop here in Paris called ‘L’epee de bois‘ and got him some fantastic replacements – so much more beautiful than most of this plastic stuff. Like this little helicopter – I love it!

PS. This is a great site where you’re informed about many of the dangers in kids products (at least in Germany).

What a sweet idea..

ringNoraKogan

I love this ring. It’s so touching, when you think of the reason why’re wearing it..hmmm

It makes me think of this beautiful necklace I got from Em the day after I gave birth to our son. It’s by our favorite jewellery designer in Paris who makes everything by hand so that every piece is unique. It’s made of oxidised silver (that’s why it’s so dark) with a little black diamand attached (which I always think symbolises our little diamand). I love this necklace, it’s so delicate. So I thought I could maybe have something similar engraved on the buttom side of the little silvery plate. I’d love that!

Which makes me think of birth gifts in general.. and my italian friend Eva who told me that when she was born her dad took her mom to Fendi and told her that she could choose whatever she wanted! 🙂 …italians

Motherhood…

I’m reading this beautiful book Great with child by Beth Ann Fennely which I recommend for all new moms and moms to be. And last night I read this beautiful phrase which I wanted to share as it really touched me.. I felt as if Fennely spoke right from my heart. It’s kind of reassuring..to know others are also afraid to fail.

“Motherhood, for you I gave up guarantees and road maps, for you I traded my plaid uniform skirt for a cardboard rocket ship. For you, I have appeared indecorous, and, more than once, worse than indecorous. Yes I have been downright foolish. And it would seem you give so little in return -no patches! No gold stars! Not even a sash! I cannot fully predict or perfect you, I will spend my life attempting it, and I will fail, I will fail because I know that ten life times aren’t enough. And that is both my sorrow and my deep, thrumming joy.”
